Queen Margaret II, 83, who ascended the throne in 1972, made the surprise announcement on live TV during her traditional New Year’s Eve speech, watched by many in the country of about six million people.
Queen Margaret II said, “Surgery has naturally given rise to concerns about the future, it is time to leave the responsibility to the next generation”.
“I have decided that now is the right time, on 14 January 2024, 52 long years after I succeeded my beloved father – to step down as Queen of Denmark,” Queen Margrethe II of Denmark said.
